How is it that one day Digby was my best friend's cute twin brother, and then the next he stole air, gave jitters, twisted my insides up?
And with Mom gone, bills to pay and Wren to look after... Why does the best thing happen at the worst time?
This Raging Light is a debut novel by Estelle Laure. It is told in the first person by Lucille, a seventeen year old with the weight of the world upon her.
Who is she? Is she...
- a daughter
- a big sister to Wren
- a best friend to Eden
- a lovelorn teen
- a kick ass chick
- a warrior
- a heroine
- all alone
- one of those who when the going gets tough, the tough gets going
- coping with loss on a large scale
This book drew me in, I liked how Lu's difficulties and challenges kept coming at her. It seemed just too much, how could she not just snap and go under? Yet she has an inner strength and a lot more going for her than she at first realises.
At times the story evoked a smile and other times I swallowed hard. Lu, Wren, Eden, Digby and both sets of parents face big challenges. Life is hard, but there is hope.
I haven't heard of this author but I'm curious. It sounds like Lu is an interesting character and she definitely sounds complex!
ReplyDeleteI think I would like this one...yup
ReplyDeleteI love this style of mini-review. It cuts to the chase! I quite fancy reading this one now! Thank you...
ReplyDeleteSounds like a good YA debut. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
ReplyDeleteI'm interested and I love the name Digby, although the theme of loss seems awfully heavy. I'll have to save it for a day when I need a heavier read.
ReplyDeleteLove the review Kathryn. I also love to bring new authors to light. Thanks this one looks good
ReplyDeleteI've read so many glowing reviews for this one, but have been skeptical abut picking it up. Realistic fiction is a hit or miss for me. The themes have to be expertly handled otherwise the book will more than likely grate on me. Thanks for your honest review Kathryn :)
ReplyDeleteNice review! Makes me want to give this book a try.
