It's Monday! What Are You Reading? is a place to meet up and share what you have been, are and about to be reading over the week. It's a great post to organise yourself. It's an opportunity to visit and comment, and er... add to that ever growing TBR pile! So welcome in everyone. This meme started with J Kaye's Blog and then was taken up by Sheila from Book Journey. Sheila then passed it on to Kathryn at the Book Date. And here we are!
I had another great week of reading. Winter hit us in the last week, it usually does at this time, so cold and wet. Means my walks are fewer because I am not willing to get soaking wet.
While I try not to buy new books I do! Cough! However while chatting on an author's FB reading page we got to talking about books we read as children and loved. Someone mentioned the Cherry Ames books (I liked what I read of them) and that in turn reminded me of the Sue Barton books, so in a moment of weakness I purchased from Amazon a set of the seven books in the series. At a stiff cost when you take in postage to NZ etc.
What would be one of your childhood nostalgic books or series?
What I read last week:
I listened to this from the library while sewing. I gobbled it up, really loved it on audio. I won't be reviewing it but Rita's short review of The Stars are Fire at Paging Through Books was the one that fully decided me on reading it. And as I listened to the audiobook version I highly recommend the narration of Suzanne Elise Freeman.
I also listened to Until it Fades
I really enjoyed this romantic tale that had a Cinderella tinge to it. Enjoyable and entertaining and really well narrated. Sheer escapism!
From the TBR shelf I read and liked We Never Asked for Wings. I also read a review book - Until You Loved Me by Brenda Novak - review will be posted. Liked it as well.
What I am reading at present:
Now reading a review book, the one granted to me a year after requesting! It is historical fiction and I think I will enjoy it. 30% in.
And just starting to listen to...
The title alone would draw me in! But I've read some of your reviews too ;)

My nostalgic childhood books are the Little House on the Prairie books by Laura Ingalls Wilder and any books by Judy Blume. I love the look of all the books featured in this post. Enjoy your reading week.
ReplyDeleteI read the Hardy Boys books over and over as a kid, so those would probably be my nostalgic reads! Along w/ Trixie Belden- anything w/ a mystery!

ReplyDeleteMy nostalgic reads are definitely Enid Blyton's Malory Towers and St. Clare's series. I never read Hardy Boys- but I did read most of the Nancy Drew books!

I read the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew books when I was young. I am having trouble making my Audible selections this month. I have over 200 in my wish list which I know is crazy. Lately I have been on sci fi (space opera or post apocalyptic) binge but sometimes I want something lighter like a romance or cozy.

It always feels funny to me reading about how you are in the middle of winter when we are having a glorious summer. I know what you mean about walking in the rain though, nothing quite a icky. Hopefully you get clear days to walk this week. Emma x

ReplyDeleteI hadn't heard of "The Bookshop at Water's End" until just now seeing it on your post, but it's now on my to-read list! I don't read a ton of chick lit but I'm always a sucker for novels involving books or bookstores! Enjoy your cold and wet for me... in my post today I mentioned how much I'm craving a good thunderstorm (something we almost never get here in Hawaii).

I just finished The Bookshop at Water's End...a very enjoyable read. I bet it is great in audio.

Hi Kathryn! It is very cold and wet here with us as well. This past weekend has been dreadful. I had friends visiting, so there wasn't that much time for reading. But I will hopefully get to do a bit more reading done this next week.

When I was a kid, I loved the Bobbsey Twins series. From there, I moved to Nancy Drew and Trixie Belden. I still have my vintage Bobbsey Twins books, which I passed down to my girls. I think my oldest sister snagged the Trixie Belden and Nancy Drew books, but I bought my own set of Nancy Drew!

ReplyDeleteAfter many years of interacting with Australian friends online, it still blows my mind that July = winter there! Silly, I know.
ReplyDeleteI remember the Cherry Ames books when I was a kid! My favorites were the mysteries - I gobbled up Nancy Drew books but my favorite series was Trixie Beldon - my friend and I used to pretend to be Trixie and her friend, Honey, but we could never find any mysteries in our suburban neighborhood!

2017 Big Book Summer Challenge
I love that you bought the whole set of childhood books. I think the Beverly Cleary books would be that for me and also the Anne of Green Gables. I have the Anne set. I also have all of the Nancy Drew but may have only read one or two. Costco used to sell them and then I started buying them and then ordering the ones I didn't have off of Amazon. Working on my book post.

ReplyDeleteOh nostalgia book purchases always seem to be expensive! I almost bought the Little House on the Prairie Box Set during Amazon prime days totally out of nostalgia. But then I was like, I don't have a kid to read them at the moment (my step son wouldn't touch them, I'm certain), so why? So I talked myself out of that one. Happy Reading :)
