2013 Midwinter's Eve Giveaway Hop

This hop is being organised and run by Mary at Bookhounds and Kathy at I Am A Reader Not a Writer.  Truthfully I loved the picture and thought this will be a great one to be involved in.  Now I sit here in our midsummer heat and wonder... I think I will just pretend!

Giveaway banner
Both giveaways open internationally.

I will be giving away an Amazon voucher or book(s) at the Book Depository to the value of $15 USA.

I will also be giving this Kindle ebook away to a second winner.
Click on the picture to see what readers on Amazon have to say.  You will need to indicate if you wish to win this.  I know some people don't like ebooks, so only enter if you like romance, like ebooks and own a Kindle! I read it from NetGalley and would just like to give the author a sale as a thank you for the pleasure of reading her book.  Barnes and Noble allow 'give as a gift' on their site too, so a Nook version will be no problem either.

My review of Detained.  So if you are a romance reader and like a well written romance - try this one by Australian author Ainslie Paton.

Winner of ebook Detained was Nurma.

Winner of $15 part of the giveaway has been contacted and I will update when we she has touched base with me.

Gratitude Giveaway Hop

Picture of Cornucopia of Goodness of Harvest

This Giveaway Hop is run by Kathy at I am a Reader not a Writer.

I love this idea of a Giveaway that is centred on gratitude. We don't have Thanksgiving in New Zealand of course, however gratefulness is an attitude to foster.  I am grateful for the wonderful books I have read and enjoyed in 2013, for the bloggers who share their reads and for those who call in and leave a message to me on my blog.

I am giving away a book(s) of your choice up to the value of US $15  from the Book Depository. Or you may prefer an Amazon voucher.  All you have to do is name your way of following me ... Bloglovin, Twitter, Goodreads,  email, commenting on It's Monday! meme ....or ....

Book Blog Hop

Billy from  Ramblings of a Coffee Addict has relaunched the Book Blogger Hop. Each week the hop will start on Friday and end on Thursday. There will be a weekly prompt just like before. The hop’s purpose will remain the same as it will give bloggers a chance to follow other blogs, learn about new books, befriend other bloggers, and receive new followers to your own blog.

This week:
Were you born a bookworm or did someone get you into the habit of reading?

I can never remember not wanting to read a book.  I always remember loving them.  My Dad loves reading so he probably encouraged it when I was young.  I grew up loving Enid Blyton's Noddy and Big Ears, then many of her other books.  As I grew to school age I read whatever I could get my hands on.  We only had a very small class library and no public library all through my elementary and middle grade years.  I was always wandering around looking for a book.

Now we have a great public library and of course the internet to feed my reading appetite.  My joy now is to entice my students who are not natural bookworms into reading.  With lots of success I might add!

This week's topic:

Do you like or dislike Rafflecopter and why?
I have not yet used Rafflecopter so I am not really qualified to discuss this topic.  As my blog has only been going for six months I have not yet been involved in a giveaway.  At some stage I will do one to gain some experience!  I will be interested in what others say.  I have seen a Google form used where you just put in your name and email - no hoops to jump through to enter!  I am guessing it does the random picking for you.

However that said, Rafflecopter would appear to do the job?  I have used it for entering simple Giveaways, but sometimes don't appreciate the hoops you need to jump through to enter.  When entering I do like clear terms and conditions, and I like to see the blogger post the winner in a post on their blog, that way seems up front to me.  But as I said, very little experience as yet in this field.  Any recommendations welcome!

This week's question:
So would you read a book just because of the hype?

Very rarely would I read a book just because of the hype.  I would look at who is recommending the book?  Are they someone I respect as a reader or like as an author.  If I do, then I may give it a try.  If no one I know is recommending the book, then I will make my own decision based on a number of readers and also what the book is about.

This week's question:
When you are writing your reviews do you write them as you read, or wait until you are completely done with the book?
My answer:
I write the review when I have finished reading, however I often keep a notebook beside me as I read and jot down thoughts that I might later develop when writing the review.

This week's question is:  What is your favourite genre?  And share a book from that genre.

Sometimes I find it difficult to name the genre I most like!  I think it's women's fiction - contemporary, with a strong romantic element.

So to give you a general idea these are some of the authors and books that I favour and recommend.

Kristan Hannah                          Winter Garden
Susan Mallery                            Barefoot Season
Susan Wiggs                             The Ocean Between Us
Emilie Richards                          Wedding Ring
Robyn Carr                                The House on Olive Street.
Wendy Wax                               The Accidental Bestseller

So, there you are.

This week's question is about a favourite trilogy.

Hmmm.   Well in YA I have read The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins and I enjoyed that very much.
The Hunger Games
Catching Fire
Mockingjay

I have read Divergent and Insurgent by Veronica Roth and am now waiting for the third - Allegiant, out later this year.

I also enjoyed the contemporary romance trilogy by Lisa Kleypas: Travis Family.
Sugar Daddy
Blue Eyed Devil
Smooth Talking Stranger.

I also read many Nora Roberts' trilogies and enjoy them very much.

What is your favourite trilogy?

What is your favourite series that you have read all the books?
Well actually that is rather difficult to name, as I have a number of series that I loved, read and still own the books that sit on my bookshelf because I just might read the whole series again!

I think though my choice is the time historical fiction travel series by Diana Gabaldon.  It is set in Scotland and follows the adventures of Jamie and Claire and their family.  It has provided me with many hours of reading and listening.
  • Outlander
  • Dragonfly in Amber
  • Voyager
  • Drums of Autumn
  • The Fiery Cross
  • A Breath of Snow and Ashes
  • An Echo in the Bone
Coming out in December is #8  Written in My Own Heart's Blood.  As soon as it hits the shelves in the shop I will be right into it.

Question this week by Elizabeth.
Have you ever been to BEA, and if so do you recommend attending?  Any good time advice for those attending for the first time?

No I have never been to BEA, and can only wish!  I would love to be there I think.  However I live in New Zealand so would be quite a long trip!  If I went I would want to include another one or two.  I think there was a RT convention recently and I would love to go there so would include both in my wish list.

I will try and catch some of the online streaming though at the BEA if times work out for me.  If you are attending hope you enjoy it and blog about it!

This week's topic is: What is your guilty pleasure read?

I enjoy the books I read and take pleasure with no guilt attached!  However the guilty pleasure part to books for me is:
  • When I buy more books and I already have so many sitting in my TBR pile.
  • When I sit on a Saturday morning and read, with house work, gardening chores still undone.
  • When I chose to read the books 'just for me', instead of taking time out to read the books I want to also read to book talk books to my 12 and 13 year old students.
  • When I read late into the evening, and then feel grouchy the next day because I didn't get enough sleep.

This week's prompt:  What was the last book you read that was recommended to you by someone else.  Did you like it?

The last book I read was The Good Woman by Jane Porter.  This was recommended by a reader that I follow on Goodreads.  I read her review of The Good Daughter on her blog, then decided  to start with the first one in the series.  (Note: she didn't recommend it to me personally,  but before reading her review I had not heard of the author or the book.

Yes I did enjoy it, although I disagreed somewhat with how the main character was portrayed. I felt she shouldered more of the blame for the unfaithfulness in her marriage.  I thought the husband should have carried more of it.  However this book had me thinking long after I had finished it, and I will read the next book in this series at some point.

This is my first time taking part in this hop, I thought it might be one I can keep up with, as I also read middle grade and YA which I track on another blog and I join in It's Monday, What Are You Reading, with that blog.
